This book's author and title are potentially misleading, since it is its subtitle that most accurately and fully identifies its contents. Before, therefore, considering the usefulness and merits of The Uppsala Edda, I acknowledge the debt those like myself owe to those who undertake the detailed (i.e., tedious) work needed to produce volumes of this sort. As such, I review this volume not so much as a peer of Heimir Pálsson, who prepared the edition, notes, and introduction, or Anthony Faulkes, the translator, as I do as someone whose scholarship texts such as theirs make possible. Rather, I tend to produce analyses of the interwoven contents and contexts of Snorri Sturluson's Edda and related texts, with a focus on the interpretation of accounts of myth, and the place and role of religion in medieval Norse society. I have no experience or training in manuscript studies or in the preparation of editions or translations. Also, Anthony Faulkes Prose Edda seems to be highly recommended, but I'm having trouble finding a Kindle version of that specific translation.I preface this review by specifying the standpoint from which I will assess this new edition and English translation, designed to "be of benefit to Anglophone students and scholars unaccustomed to diplomatic editions" (cxxiii), of the Icelandic manuscript known as Uppsalabók or Codex Upsaliensis, or U for short. I've seen suggestions that the Carolyne Larrington version of the Poetic Edda is best. so I do have good base knowledge, I'm looking to expand and fill in the gaps I'm still missing and I feel like a good review of the Eddas is a good place to start (and will probably move on to things like the Heimskringla and Saxo later on, so if anyone has translation suggestions, again specifically Kindle versions I don't have space for physical books right now, I would appreciate those as well. I've been a practicing Heathen since 2018 so I have done my share of rituals, communicating with the Gods, meditations, etc. I'd like a modern version to help round out what I already know. I have read multiple versions of the Poetic Edda before (ones I've found free online, Bellows, Hollander, Thorpe, and Chisholm) but those were very early on in my Heathenry days (literally the first materials outside of Wikipedia I read) and the translations are VERY dated in language. I want to get Kindle versions of both the Poetic and Prose Eddas.
